Pahayag nito, “The first time around no one believed that I won that fight against Manny Pacquiao, but this second time around I have to make it more decisive in everybody’s eyes  including you guys, that I win this second fight.”

Pahayag ni Manny, “This time around I have to get it back and show that I still have that aggressive and killer instinct.”

Ayon kay Bob Arum, “He doesn’t want to fight south paws, because south paws are contrary to his boxing style. And particularly doesn’t want to fight speedy south paws like Pacquiao. And for that reason, he’s not gonna fight Pacquiao. All of this stuff is for show. It’s like one demand after another demand. But like I told Manny, you can’t keep agreeing to the demands, because once you agree to one, there will be another one.”

(Aaron Romero / Ruth Navales, UNTV News)

(JP Ramirez / Ruth Navales, UNTV News)

(Reuters) – Miami’s LeBron James, wearing a protective mask to shield his broken nose, plundered a career-high 61 points in the Heat’s 124-107 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats on Monday.

James, who sustained the injury late last month, drained 22 of his 33 shots. The four-time MVP scored 24 points at halftime and poured in another 25 in the third quarter alone, while making his first eight three-pointers.

The outburst surpassed is previous career high of 56 points set back in 2005 when he played for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

It also fell one point short of Carmelo Anthony’s NBA season-high of 62.

The Miami crowd at American Airlines Arena showered James with cheers as he strengthened his case for another MVP in a two-man race between himself and Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant.

“Napakahalaga yun kasi gusto pa naming humaba yung game namin kaya kelangan talagang manalo. Kaya sana suportahan pa nila ang MMDA,” pahayag ni Sanders, itinanghal na player of the game.

Sa second game, nagtapos sa 3-point lead ang Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) kontra LGU Vanguards, 101 to 98 final score upang makamit ng Cavaliers ang ikatlong sunod na pagwawagi sa elimination round.

19-21 sa first quarter.

“Lumamang kami, lumamang sila, up to the last seconds hindi mo alam kung anong mangyayari.

Young adults who do cardio may have quicker minds later on

(Reuters Health) – The longer you can run when you’re young, the faster your mind is likely to be operating in middle age, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that better cardiac fitness in young adults translated to better brain fitness 25 years later, adding to a growing body of evidence that links heart health with mental functioning.

“Our study links fitness, which can be influenced by vigorous activity, but also by general engagement with life and the community or ‘being part of things,’ with poorer thinking skills at age ages 43 to 55 years,” author David R. Jacobs told Reuters Health by email.

Jacobs worked on the new study at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

He and his coauthors analyzed data on 2,700 men and women over a 25-year period. The participants were recruited in 1985, when they were all between 18 and 30 years old.

In 1985, all participants did a short treadmill test to assess their fitness. The researchers recorded how long each person could maintain running at their top speed.

There were seven follow-up checks over the next 25 years. At the last one, in 2010, researchers tested the participants’ mental functioning with three tests of visual memory, reaction speed and the kind of mental control needed to answer a trick question, such as identifying the color of the word yellow written in green ink (correct answer: “green”).

In general, people who were more fit at the beginning of the study were more likely to have higher education, to smoke less, to be active more often and to have healthy blood pressure and lower cholesterol than people who were less fit.

For the memory test, researchers showed each person a list of 15 words, then 10 minutes later asked them to recall those words. When they looked at participants’ fitness as young adults, they found that for every extra minute an individual could keep sprinting on the treadmill back then, the person remembered .12 more words correctly on the memory test 25 years later.

People who were fitter in youth also performed noticeably better on the reaction speed test and the trick question test, according to the results published in the journal Neurology.

Another recent analysis of the same data linked lower blood pressure and blood sugar in the teen years and twenties with quicker memory and learning skills in middle age (see Reuters Health story of April 1, 2014, here: reut.rs/1or6jez).

The two papers taken together indicate that aspects of behavior and fitness at average age 25 predict thinking skills at average age 50, Jacobs said.

The mounting evidence suggests that this heart-brain connection begins working early in life, he said.

It is possible that exercising more at an early age simply lowers blood pressure, which then lowers the risk for cognitive decline and dementia, but the researchers took differences in blood pressure into account, Jacobs said, and the results held.

“My interpretation is that something about being more fit, or just doing better on the specific treadmill test that we included, has a connection to better thinking skills,” he said.

“We know lifestyle is absolutely fundamental to this whole picture,” said Dr. Jennifer G. Robinson, director of the Prevention Intervention Center at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, who was not involved in the new study.

More and more research is identifying subtle changes in heart health early on that predict brain health later, Robinson told Reuters Health.

We can’t say yet that physical activity will improve brain function, but it is a good bet that better physical fitness is a positive thing generally, Jacobs said.

“We find many connections between life and biology in youth that predict who has a better or worse profile in late middle age,” he said. “Health starts in childhood, or even before birth.”

(Reuters) – Manny Pacquiao scored a unanimous decision win over Timothy Bradley to regain the WBO welterweight title on Saturday and avenge a highly controversial loss to the American in June 2012.

Two judges scored the fight 116-112 for Pacquiao, while a third saw it as a 118-110 win for the Filipino. In their previous fight, Bradley was awarded a split decision victory that many observers felt Pacquiao had won clearly.

“He threw a lot of punches and I didn’t want to be careless,” said Pacquiao. “In the second half of the fight, I listened to my corner and they told me to work on the timing of my punches.”

Pacquiao added that his trainer Freddie Roach “told me to make adjustments and I did. Bradley was wild on the outside so I took it to the inside.”

The early rounds of the fight were explosive, with Pacquiao the aggressor and Bradley looking to land big counter right hands as the Filipino moved forward.

A wild third round saw both men exchanging vicious shots, a pair of lefts from Pacquiao being followed by an uppercut and a right hand from Bradley and a series of ripping body shots by the American.

Through five, Bradley (31-1, 12 KOs) appeared to be on top and Pacquiao looked uncertain how to land cleanly without exposing himself to big counters.

In the sixth, however, the momentum shifted.

Bradley’s output suddenly dropped and Pacquiao (56-5-2, 38 KOs) adjusted his style to throw fast combinations and move out of the way before Bradley had the chance to load up.

The seventh may have been the Filipino’s most dominant round, as he pinned Bradley to the ropes and unleashed flurries.

Bradley beckoned him on, daring him to attack, and Pacquiao paused warily before resuming his assault and landing a hard left hand that stunned his foe.

Bradley continued to have his moments, notably in the ninth round when he landed some hard combinations to Pacquiao’s chin to stem the challenger’s assault, but his punches were more ragged and wild, while Pacquiao’s were shorter and sharper.

Bradley said he had been going for the knockout.

“I tried. I really tried,” he said. “I wanted that knockout. Manny’s a great fighter, maybe one of the best ever. I lost to one of the best.”

It was the first defeat of Bradley’s career.

(Reuters) - Stanislas Wawrinka signaled his French Open ambitions by beating Roger Federer 4-6 7-6 (5) 6-2 in an all-Swiss Monte Carlo Masters final on Sunday.

Third seed and Australian Open champion Wawrinka recovered from the loss of the opening set to claim his maiden Masters title on the Monte Carlo clay just six weeks before the May 25-June 8 grand slam tournament in Paris.

“I can see that when mentally I’m there and I’m fighting, I can play tennis, I can beat all the players,” Wawrinka told reporters.

“When I came here, for me it was more like a test. I knew I was playing good tennis, but I didn’t expect to win because the draw was so strong.

“Clay, it’s natural for me. It’s easy. I’m always happy to come back on clay. It’s always easy.”

Federer, whose only defeat in 14 previous matches against Wawrinka was in Monte Carlo in 2009, said: “I had a great week. Congratulations to Stan, I hope it will continue for you like that for years.”

Fourth seed Federer, who beat an injured Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, was his brilliant old self for almost an hour but the 17-times grand slam champion was eventually overwhelmed by his opponent’s power.

Wawrinka played with great depth as Federer was eventually pushed back far from his baseline and was prevented from attacking.

“I don’t think I served quite so well early on in the third set,” Federer said.

“I think he really found his range and started to hit bigger, deeper. He didn’t miss that many second serve returns anymore.

“He gave me a couple cheap points in the first couple sets which he later on really didn’t give me anymore.”

Federer saved a break point in the fourth game, Wawrinka banging his racket on his head in frustration after his passing shot went long.

Federer was more composed, breaking for 3-2 as Wawrinka’s usually reliable backhand sailed long.

Another long backhand from Wawrinka gave Federer the opening set after 42 minutes.

Wawrinka opened a 2-0 lead in the second set, only for his opponent to steal his serve straight back with a stunning backhand down the line.

Federer saved more break points in the fourth game, including one with a superb forehand winner as the second set went to a tiebreak.

Federer saved two set points before Wawrinka finished it off with a smash.

Wawrinka broke in the first game of the decider with a forehand winner down the line as Federer looked disorientated.

Federer went to the net to save another break point at 2-0, but a crosscourt forehand earned Wawrinka a second break and a 3-0 lead.

He followed up on serve and Federer never threatened a comeback, bowing out following yet another forehand winner by Wawrinka.

(Reuters) – Chris Paul missed just two shots in a stunning 32-point display as the Los Angeles Clippers blasted the Oklahoma City Thunder 122-105 on Monday to seize a Game One victory in their Western Conference semi-final series.

Paul made his first eight three-pointers, a career-best total, and finished 12-for-14 from the field with 10 assists as Los Angeles enjoyed a surprisingly dominant road win to open the best-of-seven series.

“It was just one of those nights. This will definitely go down in the history books for me,” Paul told reporters.

With the victory, the Clippers continued to distance themselves from the cloud of controversy that hovered above a first round series overshadowed by owner Donald Sterling’s racist comments that led to a life ban from the NBA.

The Clippers were expected to ease past Golden State but despite the unwanted distraction created by Sterling’s remarks, Los Angeles held on to edge the sixth-seeded Warriors in a hard-fought series that went the distance.

The Thunder also waded through a seven-game struggle of their own against Memphis but appeared ill-prepared for a free-scoring Los Angeles team, despite 29 points from Russell Westbrook and 25 from Kevin Durant.

Paul showed his hand early, pouring in five three-pointers in the first quarter alone to lead the road team to a 39-25 advantage at the break.

The Clippers continued to build on their momentum as the Thunder appeared powerless to slow them down with Los Angeles leading by as much as 29 points late in the fourth quarter.

All Star Blake Griffin finished with 23 points and Jamal Crawford added 17 off the bench in the winning effort.

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Thabo Sefolosha, regarded as a defensive specialist, rejoined the starting lineup after being benched for the past two games but his presence had almost no effect on the Clippers’ offense.

“We have to be more physical with them, and make them feel us a little bit more,” Durant said.

May 6 (Reuters) – Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder was named on Tuesday as the National Basketball Association’s Most Valuable Player for the 2013-14 season.

Durant won the MVP award for the first time in his seven-year career, claiming the honor by a landslide after capturing his fourth scoring title in five seasons and leading the Thunder to the Northwest Division title and the NBA playoffs.

Miami Heat’s LeBron James, who had won the MVP title four times in the last five seasons, finished a distant second in the voting while Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers was third, Joakim Noah of the Chicago Bulls fourth and James Harden of the Houston Rockets fifth.

Durant received 119 first-place votes from a total of 124 votes cast by sportswriters and broadcasters in North America plus one special fan vote. James picked up the other six first-place votes.

During the regular season, five-time All-Start Durant averaged a career-best 32 points per game to go with 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists, also a career high.

In capturing his fourth scoring title, he joined Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, George Gervin and Allen Iverson as the only players to win at least four scoring titles.

The 25-year-old forward, who also won a gold medal with the U.S. team at the 2012 London Olympics, scored more than 40 points in a game 17 times during the season.

The Heat had lost all four meetings with the Nets during the regular season, but the two-time defending NBA champions have been dominant in the playoffs, improving to 5-0 after whitewashing Charlotte in the opening round.

LeBron James led the way with 22 points, Ray Allen scored 19 off the bench and Miami outsourced Brooklyn 61-43 in the second half to run away with the win. Nets forwards Paul Pierce (eight points) and Kevin Garnett (zero points, four rebounds) were non-factors. Game Two of the best-of-seven series is on Thursday, again in Miami.

(Reuters) – Roy Hibbert emerged from a deep playoff slump to help rescue the Indiana Pacers as they edged Washington 86-82 on Wednesday to avoid falling behind by two games in the Eastern Conference semi-final.

Hibbert, coming off a Game One performance in which he failed to record a point or rebound, broke through with 28 points and nine rebounds that allowed Indiana to tie the best-of-seven series 1-1.

Indiana’s seven-footer had been under fire for his poor play throughout the post-season and he credited his team for helping him regain form. “Paul (George) took me out on his boat yesterday and we sat there and fished – we didn’t even talk about basketball,” Hibbert told reporters. “My team mates really believed in me. I’m thankful for such great team mates.”

Things were not as harmonious for the whole game for the top-seeded Pacers, who trailed 77-74 with five minutes to go before answering with a 10-2 run that clinched the contest.

Lance Stephenson hit a 3-pointer with 21.4 seconds left, giving the Pacers a five-point lead. Stephenson finished with 12 points, and guard George Hill scored 14.

Marcin Gortat tallied 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Wizards. Bradley Beal added 17 points and seven assists while point guard John Wall had a second difficult shooting night, making just 2-for-13 from the field.

The Wizards now head home to Washington for Game Three on Friday.

Washington surprised Indiana by jumping on them early in Game One, but it was the turn of the Wizards to be blindsided by Hibbert in the rematch.

“We knew he was going to get touches, no one expected him to score 28,” Gortat said.

“The most important thing is to make sure he’s not going to come back the next game with the same effort.”
